EVENTS
Thank you to our guest and to those who provided donations for “Poway Titans Together!” It was a success!
Our first annual fundraising dinner and auction to benefit Poway High Student Services raised more than $30,000. Approximately 140 people attended the event held March 3, 2013 at The Country Club of Rancho Bernardo.
Student services, which provides
critically needed counseling and support services for the students,
was in danger of discontinuing due to state budget cuts. The
success of the event, which more than doubled its fundraising goal,
will ensure the continuation of services into the next school
year.
"Something I admire most about Poway is the community's character. When the need arises our residents step up with compassion, leadership and donations that make a positive impact,” said Scott Fisher, Principal at Poway High. “The support this community has shown for "Poway Titans Together!" will help provide that extra level of student support and counseling that would otherwise not be available. Our school and our community should all feel good about what we have accomplished."
The Student Services Program, coordinated by Poway High teacher Traci Barker-Ball and the PHS Counseling Department, provides students with education programs on drug and alcohol abuse and intervention, individual and group counseling in times of crisis and emergency support. Critical to the success of Student Services program is peer counseling provided by a team of almost 90 trained students.
“Most people
outside of school have no idea how important Student Services is to
the kids here at Poway High,” said Traci Barker-Ball, Student
Services Coordinator. “Whether it is classroom issues, boy or girl
friend problems, conflict at home, drug and alcohol concerns, all
the way to thoughts of suicide, our programs provide a lifeline
that students might not be able to find
elsewhere.”
